Description: This course approaches the art of fiction with the conviction that good writers must be careful readers. Close reading will be integral as we study craft elements such as characterization, scene, and dialogue along with selected works from contemporary masters of the short story. Exercises and writing prompts will lead to workshopping our own story drafts. Process and discovery are emphasized, with attention given both to generation and revision.

This course meets the requirements for the Writing Flag. If you wish to receive Writing Flag credit for this course, you must submit a petition to the School of Undergraduate Studies. Please contact your academic advisor if you have any questions about Writing Flag credit.

Official UT Course Description: Detailed study and practice of the techniques of fiction writing; includes reading and analysis of contemporary models.

Prerequisites: Comparative Literature 315, English 603B, E 316K, or Tutorial Course 603B; or consent of University Extension.
