This course will explore in depth major contemporary civil liberties themes, such as religious exercise, free speech, search and seizure, criminal procedure, capital punishment, right to privacy, equal protection (race, gender, and sexual orientation), due process, and disabilities rights. The course will study the legal principles involved in these civil liberties themes, as well as the historical, social, and cultural contexts and milieus in which they have arisen as issues in American society.
Class limited to 35 students.
Official UT Course Description: Intensive study of various aspects of law and the legal system. May be repeated for credit when the topics vary.
Prerequisites: Six semester hours of lower-division coursework in government.
