The purpose of this course is to provide the student with a basic foundation in the finance discipline. In this course, one will 1) become acquainted with the financial environment and learn how the financial system interacts with the economy; 2) learn the fundamentals of investment activities; and 3) develop an understanding of how businesses allocate financial resources in an uncertain environment to maximize shareholder wealth.

The course is divided into four segments that correspond with the course objectives: general finance concepts, general business concepts, fundamentals of valuation, corporate decision making. A stock market simulation game is also undertaken and several business ethics discussion cases are included.

Important Rules: You will need access to a computer to do your project. You will need access to the Internet. Know your own degree requirements and the rules governing the Foundations Program. Prerequisite classes are mandatory and necessary. The Business Foundations Certificate requires that the class be taken for a grade and not pass/fail. An overall GPA of 2.00 is required.

Official UT Course Description: Principles of effective financial management, including planning, organization, and control; financial intermediaries; securities markets; evaluating alternative assets, debt, and capital structures.

Prerequisites: Upper-division standing; Accounting 310F, or ACC 311 (or 311H) and ACC 312 (or 312H).
