Description:
In genetics, our focus in the past has been molecule by molecule, base by
base, protein by protein. With the genomic explosion, however, we now
examine the forest and the trees. In this course, you will learn the basics
of genes and inheritance, but you will also gain a strong understanding of
genetic biotechnologies and the new wave of genomics research. The course
will provide you with a solid understanding of the structure and function of
genes and chromosomes, including regulation, arrangement, and molecular
interactions. Sections on genetic models for research and molecular
evolution will also be covered.
BIO 325, Genetics, is a prerequisite for all other upper-division biology courses.
Students must have the approval of the University Extension advisor to enroll in this course. See more information about Course Approvals.
Official UT Course Description: Basic principles of Mendelism, molecular genetics, structure and function of genes and chromosomes, populations and evolution.
Prerequisites: Biology 311C (or 211) and 311D (or 214), with a grade of at least C- in each.
